What is NOT Canceled – Let’s Get Playing
This fall has brought more questions than answers regarding how our kids will remain active. At Project Play WNY, we want to let you know what is NOT canceled and help spread the word on fall programming that IS available.
Here are examples of programs that are taking place in Western New York. Many of these programs are affordable or, in some cases, free of charge. Each program has developed COVID-19 safe plans to ensure kids stay healthy while keeping them active. The programs cover a wide range of sports, so why not take the opportunity to try something new? For example, Algonquin Sports for Kids recently launched Tennis Team Challenges. In collaboration with the United States Tennis Association, coaches introduce kids of all ages to tennis skills and competition. Don’t have a tennis racket? Don’t worry! First-time registrants receive a free tennis racket and balls. As long as weather permits, Algonquin also provides drop-in sports and free play at Superman Corner (Next to 1021 Broadway) in Buffalo on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
Buffalo PAL is continuing with its PLAYSTREETS initiative. Join PAL each weekend as they distribute sports equipment courtesy of Good Sports and provide programming to different neighborhoods throughout the City of Buffalo. Check out PAL’s social media to see when they will be at a park near you.
For the girls in your world, GIRLS Sports Foundation runs Saturday morning sports sampling clinics at Lang Weber Park. Participants sample volleyball and basketball and engage in free play fun. Fall is a great time to get outside for a hike. Consider participating in Reinstein Woods’ Get Outdoors Challenge, the or WNY Land Conservancy Scavenger Hunt.
